Growing up in Kentucky, horses and the Kentucky Derby is a part of life. I always love going to the Derby, but my favorite part is the fashion. One thing you will notice if you attend any of the Derby events, including Thurby and Oaks are the gorgeous hats and fascinators. Below I am going to show you how to make a custom fascinator or hat for under $30.
Items Needed
- Fascinator or Hat (You can use one you already have) – I purchased mine from Amazon
- Fabric Glue – Fabric Fusion or Fabri-Tac
- Wire Cutters or Scissors
- Faux Flowers (I got mine from Hobby Lobby) – Lillies & Peonies
- Glitter Accessories (Again from Hobby Lobby)
- Pom Poms (Hobby Lobby) – Assorted Colors from Amazon
- Aluminum Foil
Find an old hat or fascinator you have at home. If you don’t have one, you can purchase one from Amazon. You want to decide which way the hat will be facing when you wear it. Start with your largest flower and cut the stem leaving about two inches for the glue. Decide where you want to place the flower based on how you will be wearing your fascinator or hat. Using your fabric glue apply some to the stem and bottom side of the flower. Attach it to the hat and hold the flower pushing against the fascinator/hat for a few seconds to make sure it adhered. Repeat these steps with as many faux flowers as you would like to add.
Next I went in with Glitter Accessories. You do not have to add these, however I love the color and sparkle it adds. Again add some fabric glue and attach to the fascinator/hat.
Lastly I added some Poms Poms. You do not have to add these, however, I love them, because they remind me of Spring and Summer. As long as it is not too heavy you can add anything you would like to your fascinator or hat. Feathers is another good option.
You are now ready for the horse races at the Kentucky Derby, Thurby or Oaks. I also have a video which shows all of these steps in depth from start to finish below. Enjoy and Good Luck at the Races!
